Why Do Psychoeducational Assessments Cost So Much?

June 4, 2019

The cost of a Psychoeducational assessment is in part created by the cost of the assessment tools used, the need for the overall assessment to be comprehensive enough that it isolates various cognitive and academic functions, and duration of time to takes to complete the testing and assessment report.

Testing that is not comprehensive enough will not yield the information necessary to accurately understand why someone is struggling. Without proper isolation, the recommendations given may not be of any value to the person. A comprehensive report will pinpoint both the strengths and weaknesses of the person being tested and provide recommendations that are tailored to that person.

So, while the cost may seem daunting, the information that a good Psychoeducational assessment can provide will save an enormous amount of frustration for the person, parent and/or teacher.

Many people with personal health insurance have extended coverage which may cover a portion of Psychological services for individuals. It is advisable for clients to review the details of their coverage to see whether their plan includes coverage and for how much. As well, Psychological services are GST exempt and may qualify as a medical expense for your income tax purposes.

My body was DONE with being pushed to its limit.  My body was DONE with being pushed to its limit.

I woke up one morning in so much physical pain, as I often did at the time…

I remember questioning if continuing to dance was actually serving me. My heart hurt thinking about quitting.

So, I continued through my day, attended a dance class, taught my students, and continued to live my life as I traditionally would...aware of the pain in my body and present with my mind screaming “I am not ready to give up dancing, this is who I am...so I will bear this burden.”

During that time in my life, a part of me knew I was not seeing the actual possibilities in dance, or hearing my full Truth. This was an interesting time for me, as I was educating myself in accessible dance methodologies and serving others through mixed-ability dance classes and workshops. I was speaking about hearing what your body needs, responding, and adapting the movements to make sure you feel good. Meanwhile, I was pushing my own body to its limits in the name of holding onto an identity I was terrified of letting go.

At the beginning of 2020, I realized I was ignoring my needs, silencing my voice, and hiding from my truth and something needed to change...I was pushing my body to “fit” into boxes constructed by people who have never been inside my body or know what I need. I was treating my body in ways I would never teach or ask someone to treat theirs...Talk about a double standard.

Every day, I squeezed myself into boxes that did not fit.

The box of a dance teacher who doesn’t sit down to teach, even if she is exhausted and her feet are screaming in pain.
The box of a performer who trains and pushes past her body’s ‘No’ in order to “grow” and give the choreographer what they want.
The box of working out, stretching, dancing, and working 10-12 hour days in order to never give up on the dance dream, even when I was suicidal, miserable and in pain.

When I look back, I see how I was denying my needs and causing my own pain. For what?
Most of the time I wasn’t even present or truly enjoying dance. I was just pushing my way through it.

I see now, that dance was NOT responsible for the pain I felt in my body.
